Program
Goal
The program's primary goal is to
assist youth to meet state standards for core academic subjects
by providing students with academic enrichment opportunities.
Participating Districts and Agencies
The Schuylkill Intermediate Unit
29, serving as the fiscal agent, has formed a consortium with
the following districts:
-
Mahanoy Area
-
Pine Grove Area
-
Schuylkill Haven Area
-
Shenandoah Valley
-
St. Clair Area
-
Tamaqua Area
This consortium in partnership
with Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol Commission through the
Communities That Care (CTC)
project will collaborate on a program of intervention services
that target academic and social success for middle school
students in grades 5th through 8th.
The basic objective of this
partnership is to provide an after school academic tutoring
program using Compass Learning,
a scientific researched-based, standards-based program and a
pro-social, family-centered program,
Schuylkill After School Network (SCAN).
Another key aspect
of the program is its intense focus on school-community
collaboration. Schools and all sectors of the community work
together to identify and meet the academic, social, physical and
emotional needs of the children and families they serve.
Program
Structure
The district-located 21st Century
Community Learning Centers offer participants a broad array of
programs and services, such as art, music,
recreation, character education, drug
and violence prevention
programming and technology education.
This assistance intervention for middle school students is
designed to improve academic achievement and student
self-esteem. These opportunities may take place before/after
school or holiday/summer recess.
Program
Commitment
The 21st Century Community
Learning Centers program is committed to ensuring that students
have access to high-quality and engaging enrichment activities
that truly support their learning and development.
The 21st Century further stresses
the importance of diverse groups and organizations working
together to strengthen school and community networks to help
students and families succeed.
