A 12-credit certification program that allows teachers to

Penn State Schuylkill and the Schuylkill
Intermediate Unit 29 are collaborating to offer ESL
Program Specialist Certification to the region's school
teachers. Penn State Schuylkill, an approved ESL
certification provider, is offering graduate credit in the
program and the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit, an approved
ESL certification provider, is providing Continuing
Professional Education Credit.
The Courses
***It is highly
recommended that the courses be taken in sequence.
***Each
course has been approved
for Bridge Certification in the content area of English
7-12.
Foundations of Teaching English as a Second Language (EDUC
497A)
First of four
3-credit courses. An introduction to the legal, historical,
and cultural implications of ESL including the fundamentals of
developing English language skills, an overview of second
language acquisition, and multicultural education.
English Language Structure for ESL Teachers (EDUC 497B)
Second of four
3-credit courses. An in-depth study of general linguistic
concepts and their application to ESL pedagogy. This course
reviews major ideas about linguistic analysis of grammar and
dialect with a focus on syntax and discourse, language and
communication, and evaluative classroom instruments to measure
student progress.
Language Acquisition for ESL Teachers (EDUC 497C)
Third of four
3-credit courses. In-depth study of the process involved in
the acquisition and development of first language interrelations
between psycholinguistics and cognition. Understanding the
processes involved in the acquisition and development of
language in the human species, including learning a second
language, differences in how children, adolescents, and adults
learn language, and evaluative classroom instruments to measure
student progress.
Teaching ESL Methods and Assessment (EDUC 497D)
Final of four
3-credit courses. Preparation for ESL teaching through
trends, major theories, methodologies, and assessment in second
language learning; study of second language teaching approaches
applicable to the elementary/middle/high school student;
materials development and evaluation; developing a broad base of
knowledge and skills to increase their effectiveness in meeting
the needs of diverse learners through appropriate instructional,
curricular, and behavior strategies.
Registration Information
Due to low enrollments, the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 is
not currently offering the courses for Program Specialist ESL
Certification.
