Assistive Technology is one of
the areas of technical assistance provided by Schuylkill
Intermediate Unit 29. The term assistive technology device
means any item, piece of equipment, or product system
whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, modified, or
customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve
functional capabilities of a child with a disability.
(Section 603 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act.)
The Assistive Technology consultant is
available to assist local school districts in assessing
student needs for technology; informing teams of assistive
technology options; acquiring, customizing, and implementing
technology for students; providing on-site visits for
training, implementation, integration, monitoring, and
transition of technology; aiding teams with maintenance and
repair issues; and coordinating assistive technology
services with other agencies.
Assistive technology devices (which may include hi-tech and
low-tech solutions) and services provide access for many
students with a disability to function effectively in the
general education curriculum, attain IEP goals, and meet the
Pennsylvania Academic Standards. Such devices and services
