    Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.

Anyone can take the 8-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course, but it is designed for adults who work with young people, ages 12-18 – teachers, coaches, leaders of faith communities, social workers, and other caring citizens.

Registration and Youth Mental Health First Aid manuals are free to participants.

About the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 Project AWARE Grant

The Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 (SIU) has lead the effort among local schools and community agencies to implement the Youth Mental Health First Aid training program.

In 2014, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services awarded the SIU a “Now is the Time” Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) Local Educational Agency grant. The program enabled SIU to support the training of school personnel and other adults who interact with youth in both school settings and communities to detect and respond to mental illness in children and youth.
